Announcing The Incense Of The Month Club

The Mundane Account is $100 a year ($10 a month, with the first 2 months FREE!), and includes the following:

  • 5 to 15 sticks of unique, limited edition, vintage incense, once a month, for 12 months.
  • A short blurb about this month’s incense, the scent, approximately how old it is and/or where it came from, and other information as available.

The VIP Account is $102 a year ($8.50 a month, i.e. LESS PER MONTH than the Mundane Account), and includes the following:

  • 5 to 15 sticks of unique, limited edition, vintage incense, once a month, for 12 months.
  • A short blurb about this month’s incense, the scent, approximately how old it is and/or where it came from, and other information as available.
  • Other miscellaneous goodies, such as buttons, pins, stickers, extra incense, printed goods, little good luck charms and/or other jetsam and detritus i happen to have lying around.

Hybrid Elephant, as a business, has existed for about 20 years, but I have been an incense fanatic for most of my life. One of the things that I learned, very early, is that incense is a fickle commodity, and if you find an incense you really like, it is in your best interests to acquire as much as you can of that incense, because there’s no telling when — or if — you’ll be able to buy more of it.

So, even before I started in business, I had a lot of incense. I bought multiple kilos of things like Shantimalai Nag Champa (the world’s most popular nag champa, in the red box), and Mugra Amber, by the Mysore Chandan Agarbatti Factory (which is no longer in business), and Masala T.T. Loban, by Shrinavas Sugandhalaya (which was discontinued about 30 years ago), and Adyar Meditation incense, by Shroff Channabassappa & Sons, the ingredients for which are now illegal (sandalwood products are now prohibited for export outside of india), and Sital Flora, which was owned by a pair of brothers, who argued, and in the legal battle to split up the business, one of them got the trade names and the other one got the incense recipes…

Then, early in my business experience, about 20 years ago, I began to accumulate bulk incense from a number of places, with the intent of repackaging it and selling it under the Hybrid Elephant brand. But, as with many projects that seemed like good ideas at the time, things happened, life got in the way, and I never got around to doing it.

Because of the fact that I bought them in bulk, they didn’t come in boxes, or packages with a brand on them. Most of them have labels indicating what scent they are, but most of them are wrapped in cellophane, blank newsprint, or in pages from Indian-language newspapers… which means that I no longer have access to information concerning who manufactured them. All I know is that they are all at least 20 years old, and a few of them are as much as 40 years old.

Fast forward to a couple years ago, when I began to experience “subscription services” on the web. These are places where you could pay a chunk of money and, in return, they’d send you stuff, every month: buttons, pins, stickers, candy… that sort of thing. Last year I got to thinking, what if I made my own subscription service.

Thus was born the Incense of the Month Club.

Twenty-five lucky people who sign up, will receive between 5 and 15 sticks of unique, limited edition, vintage incense, which is available nowhere else, on the web or off it — as far as I know (and if you know differently, please let me know). You will also receive a blurb about this month’s incense, what scent it is, and what I know about it, if anything.

The Mundane Account is $100 for 12 months of the Incense of the Month. It’s $10 a month, and the first two months are free! Woo! Free is good! And that’s about what you would pay to buy one pack of ordinary incense a month, and have it shipped to you.

And, if you sign up for a VIP Account — $102, or $8.50 a month (hint: it’s less money per month than the mundane account) — as well as the Incense of the Month, you’ll receive extra goodies that I have lying around: buttons, pins, stickers, trinkets, doodads and jetsam from 20 years of being in business, 40 years of being an incense fanatic, and 60 years of being an artist. Wotta deal!

If everything goes the way it should, I’ll start sending out the Incense of the Month in January of 2021. If this sounds interesting to you, we’ll have a way to sign up soon, but you can also use our contact form to get in touch, until then.
